Wednesday - October 20

Travel to San Antonio, the Alamo city. Learn about managing trails for heritage tourism. Visit the Missions, the Riverwalk, and more.

Thursday - October 21

2. HILL COUNTRY TOUR
Time: 8:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. • Cost: $35.00 (Does not include lunch)
Experience the Texas Hill Country and the planning and management of destination tourism. Visit Lyndon B. Johnson National/State Parks and Enchanted Rock State Natural Area.

3. CANYON OF THE EAGLES LODGE AND NATURE PARK (choose from 3 options below)
Time: 8:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Learn how a public agency and private developer teamed up to create a first class recreation destination and maximized funding resources.

4. BARTON CREEK WILDERNESS PARK (choose from 2 options below)
Tour this 1,700-acre nature park located only minutes from downtown Austin. A scenic 7.5-mile trail winds along Barton Creek with hiking, rock climbing, swimming and mountain biking.

5. HILL COUNTRY GROTTOS AND WINERY TOUR
Time: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. • Cost: $50.00 (Includes lunch)
Explore two of the Texas Hill Country's most beautiful nature areas, and wind up with a winery tour. Learn about nature tourism, plus managing trails in sensitive environments.

6. HORSEBACK RIDING AT THE HILL COUNTRY STATE NATURAL AREA
Time: 8:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. • Cost: $85.00 (Includes lunch)
Equestrian trail ride will begin at the Running R Ranch and travel into the adjacent Hill Country State Natural Area with its 40 miles of trails.

Saturday - October 23

Unless otherwise posted, attendees will receive a box lunch to take on their mobile workshop.

7. MCKINNEY ROUGHS ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER (choose from 2 options below)
Time: 10:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
The 1,100-acre nature park and center dedicated to the teaching of land stewardship. It has 18 miles of multi-use trails ranging from rolling hills to river bottoms.

9. THE BRUSHY CREEK REGIONAL TRAIL
Time: 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. • Cost: $25.00 (Includes onsite lunch)
Regional cooperation made this trail system possible, with land owned by three cities, a county, two municipal utility districts, and a private residential development.

10. THE BIKES AND WILDFLOWERS TOUR • Time: 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Cost: $40.00 (Includes bike & helmet, provided by the Bicycle Sport Shop)
Bike the Veloway, then experience the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, a showcase of trail building techniques and materials designed for minimal impact on the natural environment.

11. TRAIL PLANNING AND CONSTRUCTION ON SENSITIVE LANDS
Time: 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. • Cost: $35.00
Learn how community and trail user groups were able to open Slaughter Creek Watershed Protection Lands for public use as well as techniques for trail planning and construction.

12. TOUR OF MCKINNEY FALLS STATE PARK - Time: 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. • Cost: $25.00
Park Rangers will interpret this 744-acre site characterized by waterfalls, large old cypress trees, and the unusual geology of the area that was shaped by an ancient volcano.

13. EMMA LONG PARK MOTORCYCLE TRAIL - Time: 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. • Cost: $25.00
Learn how motorcyclists, mountain bikers, and nature lovers comfortably share the same park and trails, and meet local Boy Scouts who created a nature trail and other volunteers.

14. AMERICAN YOUTH WORKS TRAILS - Time: 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. • Cost: $25.00
Learn about this educational organization for youth employment, which specializes in using native materials from the parks and innovative techniques to build the trails and trail facilities.

15. TOWN LAKE TRAIL HIKE - Time: 12:00 noon - 3:00 p.m. • Cost: $20.00
Walk two miles of the 10-mile loop trail in downtown Austin and learn about cooperation with hotels and businesses that make the trail a success. Meet with Bat Conservation International who will discuss how this bridge came to host the largest urban bat colony in the country.

16. TOWN LAKE TRAIL RUN - Time: 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. • Cost: $20.00
Take a run on the Town Lake Trail and learn how the trail has contributed to the growth of several trail-related businesses, and attend a clinic for aspiring as well as experienced runners.

17. WILD BASIN PRESERVE - Time: 12:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. • Cost: $30.00
The in-depth tour of this oasis of creeks and wildlife habitat in a rapidly urbanizing area includes accessible natural surface trails, construction techniques, and long-term maintenance issues.

18. AUSTIN TOURS - Time: 12:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. • Cost: $25.00
Start with a hike up Mount Bonnell to see the Austin skyline and the Hill Country. Then see Zilker Park, the Botanical Gardens, Hartman Prehistoric Garden, and Umlauf Sculpture Garden.

19. BARTON CREEK WILDERNESS PARK (choose from 3 options below)
Tour this 1,700-acre nature park and trail system only minutes from downtown Austin. Learn about managing an urban nature park plus multiple use, user safety, and construction issues.
Time: 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

20. HIGH TECHREATION AT THE CAMACHO CENTER - Time: 12:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. • Cost: $25.00
The Camacho Activity Center combines outdoor recreation and technology in teaching skills and trail activities to young people. Participate in an Eco-challenge around Town Lake.

21. SAN GABRIEL RIVER TO LAKE GEORGETOWN TRAILS
Time: 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. • Cost: $25.00
Learn how the City of Georgetown, Army Corps of Engineers and mountain bikers work together to preserve river corridors. View different types of trail construction in progress.

Information on canoeing, kayaking, & sculling concessionaires will be available at the Symposium Trailhead Information Booth.

THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN REGISTERING FOR MOBILE WORKSHOPS:

1. The weather in Austin in late October is generally pleasant, with an average daily temperature of 72 degrees. But the weather can be variable, requiring short sleeves or a light jacket within the same day. It is best to be prepared for all conditions by dressing in layers. If you have signed up for an outdoor event, please pack rain gear æ just in case. Sturdy walking or hiking shoes are recommended for all outdoor events. Trips will take place regardless of weather.

2. The local environment presents opportunities for pleasant encounters with many varieties of wildlife, but also may include ticks, snakes and plants such as poison ivy, which can cause skin irritation. Please exercise caution and don't forget to bring sun protection and insect repellant.

3. The capacity of workshops is limited and they will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. We will not be able to provide refunds or substitutions after September 24. Workshops are subject to cancellation if a minimum number of participants are not met. If applicable, a full refund will be issued. Refunds will be issued within 30 days after the Symposium.

4. Transportation has been coordinated for an optimal experience and will be provided from the Austin Convention Center. Transportation costs are included in the fee for the activity. Private vehicles will not be permitted as transportation to a mobile workshop, unless otherwise noted.

5. Water is provided at all outings, but you should bring a means to carry it, such as a fanny pack or backpack. Check description of activities for lunch information.

6. Surfaces vary from paved walkways to natural, unaltered topography. Please note descriptions in narratives and plan accordingly. We have included information about accessibility in the description of each activity; please review before registering. If you have any special needs, please advise us at the time of registration or by October 1, so we may provide reasonable accommodations.
