Baxter State Park in Maine seeks Trail Crew Leader

Baxter State Park is seeking qualified applicants to fill a Trail Crew Leader position for the 2012 season. Applicants should possess intrinsic motivation and a positive attitude. A balance of technical trail skills and interpersonal skills are a must. Potential applicants should have a love for hiking and working with groups of volunteers. Hopeful candidates should also be able to cope with the outdoor living challenges of the North Maine Woods, such as numerous biting insects and variable harsh weather conditions.

TYPICAL DUTIES

➢ Trains and supervises crew members in the safe and proper use of chainsaws, brush saws, wood and rock drills, winches, Griphoist and rigging systems.

➢ Trains and supervises crew members in the construction of rock waterbars, steps, retaining walls, rip-rap, rock cairns, bridges and puncheon.

➢ Facilitates crew operations such as food planning, tool and equipment logistics, tool maintenance and daily work plans.

➢ Orients new volunteers to safe and proper work methods.

➢ Writes reports to highlight trail conditions and details crew’s performance, achievements and morale.

➢ Responds to requests for information from hikers.

➢ Assists in search and rescue operations.

➢ May also assist in fire suppression.

REQUIREMENTS

➢ Ability to perform the manual labor required of trail work.

➢ Knowledge and skills to apply trail maintenance techniques.

➢ Ability to teach backpacking, camping and work skills to crew members.

➢ Ability to supervise and coordinate a crew of workers on trail projects throughout Baxter State Park.

➢ Possession of a valid driver’s license.

➢ Knowledge of Wilderness First Aid procedures.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Two (2) years trail work experience with one (1) year of experience leading crews.

TRAINING OFFERED

➢ 16 hours Wilderness First Aid (WFR Recertification)
➢ 16 hours Chainsaw Training
➢ Introduction to Search and Rescue
➢ Introduction to Forest Fire Suppression
➢ State mandated trainings

BENEFITS

➢ SALARY: Hourly: $12.15/ Bi-weekly: $972.00 (Effective July 1, 2009)

Value of 100% State-Paid Health and Dental Insurance: $356.62 bi-weekly.
Value of 95% State-Paid Health and Dental Insurance: $339.45 bi-weekly (Effective July 1, 2010)

Value of State's Share of Employee's Retirement: 19.96% of base pay.

➢ Housing is assigned and provided for the season*. Crews live in lean-tos, tents and cabins while working in backcountry locations. Tents provided. (*Crew Leaders can expect to live at assigned housing during front country projects. Daily propane cost for assigned housing: $ 1.50)

➢ Recreational Opportunities: 225 miles of hiking trails, 46 mountain peaks, 67 lakes and ponds, fishing, canoeing, wildlife observation and photography, whitewater rafting and kayaking on the West Branch of the Penobscot River, hiking on the Appalachian Trail, hunting in autumn, three hours to the coast; Acadia National Park, three hours to Maine’s western mountains, Allagash Wilderness Waterway to the North, music festivals and agricultural fairs.
