Trail Maintenance & Volunteer Coordinator
"Trail Boss" Intern
Location: Bozeman, Montana
Over the last 20 years, Gallatin Valley Land Trust's Community Trails Program has played a lead role in over $2 million of projects to expand, improve & maintain Bozeman's "Main Street to the Mountains" trail system. The community trail system now stretches over 60 miles, connecting neighborhoods, parks, schools and commercial areas. Our vision is to create a trail system that provides safe and enjoyable recreation and non-motorized transportation, connecting people to nature and to each other.
Responsibilities:
Help coordinate and manage a variety of trail maintenance, signage and trail building projects. Coordinate volunteer trail work projects including implementation of GVLT's Adopt-a-Trail program under the direction of the Trail Program Coordinator. Maintain positive relationships with and provide technical assistance to diverse civic groups providing volunteer trail maintenance efforts. Oversee work crews from Montana Conservation Corps for 3-5 weeks. Assist with coordination of events and community outreach and fundraising efforts. Conduct annual monitoring of trail improvements. Maintain record-keeping systems to ensure currency of data regarding trail improvements. Depending on skills and experience, assist with other projects such as trail mapping using ArcGIS, integrating GPS and digital photography.

Qualifications:
Minimum of two years (seasonal) experience with trail construction and/or maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor's Degree in natural resource management and group leadership experience preferred. Email ted@gvlt.org for more information.
Dates of Employment & Work Schedule:
Summer 2010 (flexible)
Preferred start date - May 12. Ideally the Trail Boss would start in time to assist with preparation for National Trails Day activities, Saturday June 5th.
End date - Late August or September depending on hours worked per week.
Work Schedule - Internship is a total of 330 hours during normal business hours, Monday through Friday with occasional Saturdays and evenings.
Hours per Week - Flexible, typically 15-20 hrs per week. However, a candidate who works fewer hours per week and extends the internship into September may be equally desirable.
Remuneration: $15/hour, for a total of $5000 Stipend
