North Country Trail Association seeks Executive Director

The North Country Trail Association (NCTA) seeks an Executive Director who will provide overall vision and management for the Association. This is a permanent, professional-level position that requires at least a Bachelor's degree in management, public administration, recreation, or related field. We are seeking someone with at least 3-6 years of related work experience, including the administration and leadership of a nonprofit organization or similar program.

The deadline for applications is March 15, 2007. Starting salary is commensurate with experience, within a range of $45,000 to $55,000 plus medical and retirement benefits. The work primarily is in a casual office setting in Lowell, MI.; however, visits to other sites for the purposes of promoting and representing the NCTA, soliciting funding, or coordinating work with staff, interns, volunteers, public and private partners will be expected.

The NCTA is a 25 year-old, non-profit organization working in close partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) to complete, maintain, protect and promote the North Country National Scenic Trail. The North Country Trail is a 4,600-mile long trail that crosses seven states, and is managed to provide premier hiking and backpacking experiences. The Association has grown significantly in recent years and now has over 3000 members from 40 states, and has a staff of five full-time and three part-time employees. Duties:

• Provides overall vision and leadership by working with Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers to develop and implement strategic plans.

• Manages the Association's budget and provides oversight on all financial matters.

• Directs all fundraising functions, including major donors, annual campaign, grant seeking and governmental funding sufficient to support the work of the NCTA.

• Works with the National Park Service (which administers the trail) to develop and coordinate programs, projects and financial assistance arrangements.

• Directly supervises staff, interns and contractors in areas of membership, fund development, communications, trail management, and public events.

• Advocates for legislative support and funding.

• Increases public awareness of the North Country National Scenic Trail and the North Country Trail Association.

• Oversees income generating activities and state-of-the-art accounting practices for sales, memberships, tracking public funding and other restricted donations.

Knowledge, Skills and Attributes:

• Excellent written and oral communication skills. Outstanding organizational abilities, attention to details and accuracy are musts.

• Enjoys the challenge of fundraising and promoting the growth of an organization.

• Ability to conceptualize, implement and manage a variety of projects.

• Ability to work well in a small team/office environment.

• Ability to work well with a Board of Directors.

• Demonstrated experience in successful work with governmental partners at either the local, state or federal level to accomplish large projects.

• Ability to delegate his or her work in order to accomplish priority tasks.

• Strong interpersonal skills. Needs to be friendly and considerate with enthusiasm for the work and mission of the NCTA.

Work Environment:

The Executive Director is under the supervision of the Board of Directors of the North Country Trail Association. He or she will be expected to prioritize work in order to effectively meet all day-to-day demands and ongoing assignments. The Executive Director is expected to communicate regularly with the Board president on work projects and to seek advice on new or controversial aspects of the work. The Executive Committee will complete performance evaluations at least annually.
