TRAILS FOR HEALTH AWARD for 2004 Jane Lambert, Program Manager of the Alliance for Cardiovascular Health in Utah, for her commitment to improving access to trails and promoting their use to increase physical activity throughout the state of Utah. Under Jane Lambert's direction many accomplishments connecting health and trails have occurred. These include improvements to multi-use trails such as the Jordan River Parkway and Draper's Porter Rockwell Trail, two statewide walking programs and an awareness campaign that uses television, radio, and a website (www.utahwalks.org) to promote the health benefits of physical activity and the places in Utah to recreate. With the UTAHWALKS Mile Tracker Program, individuals, walking groups, schools and community groups can log on and record the miles they walk each day. In the Gold Medal Mile program, walks were planned in communities where Legacy Gold Medal Miles exist. Organizing these walks had the added benefit of showing people where their local trails were which ultimately provided added support to advocacy groups who were planning more trails. As a result of Ms. Lambert's leadership many communities throughout Utah are taking action to increase their physical activity levels. The Trails for Health Award "recognizes a community's commitment to improving access to trails and promoting their use and importance for increasing physical activity. The award is for commitment to long term change through community design, trail planning, heightened awareness of active community environments, physical activity promotion, and increased trail use." The National Trails Awards are presented by American Trails to recognize the exemplary people across the landscape of America who are working to create a national system of trails to meet the recreation, health, and travel needs of all Americans.
