Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will spend $35 million dollars on trails over the next year. Partnerships with trail support groups are the cornerstone of this successful trails system, along with legislative support, proactive trail providers, and recognition for tourism potential.

Partnership Award

Tennessee Valley Authority and the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association have worked together so that hikers and mountain bikers can enjoy the outdoors. Over 17 miles of trail encircle TVA's Raccoon Mountain Reservoir near Chattanooga.

The Coal River Group works to protect the Big Coal, Little Coal, and Coal Rivers, preserving and interpreting the history of the rivers, and creating the 88 mile Walhonde Water Trail.

Robert H. Plymale represents District 5 in the West Virginia Senate and is Director of the Rahall Appalachian transportation Institute, is an advocate for trails throughout the region, and a key player in the development of public trails for recreation and alternative means of transportation.

Outstanding Media Award

Park Manager of the Cumberland Trail State Park, Bob Fulcher has for over 10 years hosted the Sunday night radio program "The Cumberland Trail," playing rare music of the region's heritage along with volunteer work projects updates along the Cumberland Trail.

Trails and the Arts Award

Slavic Village Development and Cleveland Public Art and Parkworks wanted an inspiring piece of artwork for the entrance to the the Morgana Run Trail. Local artist Jake Beckman designed the 35-foot tall flower sculpture that now welcomes visitors.

Step Into Cuba Alliance in Cuba, NM, is a coalition of 18 local and national groups working to promote healthy physical activity through development of sidewalks, paths, trails, and social support. The Alliance’s vision is a healthier and more pedestrian friendly community by improving trails and connecting them to surrounding scenic Federal lands.

State-of-the-Art Technology Award

The City of San Jose provides trail mileage markers to assist trail users. Supporting data for each marker is available to emergency services personnel and provides a complete set of location, surface, and accessibility data to help emergency services provide speedy assistance.

Ride With Respect, a Moab, UT area group, aims to protect natural resources while accommodating diverse recreation on public land through motorized and non-motorized use. They reach this goal through trail restoration projects and educational programs that offer certified rider-training classes.

Kids and Trails Award

Student Conservation Association brought kids and trails together on 103 crews in 18 cities across the nation. SCA’s community programs are designed to engage diverse, urban high school students who are potentially at-risk in hands-on conservation service opportunities.

Planning/Design Award

Tennessee Riverpark, now a 13-mile linear park and trail system through Chattanooga, began with an all-inclusive community planning process. After hundreds of public and private meetings iwith thousands of citizens, the Tennessee Riverpark Master Plan was established.

The Lyndhurst Foundation fosters trails planning and development in the east Tennessee and north Georgia region. The foundation focuses on the enhancement and enrichment of the natural, educational, cultural, and urban environment of Chattanooga and the surrounding area.
