A sampling of National Recreation Trails in the news or recently designated. The NRT program showcases the diversity of trails across America, from our cities and suburbs to the deserts, waterways, and high mountains.
Every kind of trail activity is represented in the listing of designated NRTs. Besides hiking and bicycling, the system includes water trails, motorized routes, snow tracks, greenways, and equestrian paths.

Hagley Museum Trail System — The Hagley Museum Trail is rich in American Industrial Revolution history. The du Pont’s founded their empire on this site, as a gunpowder manufacturer, in 1802. As the birthplace of the DuPont Company, the museum trail commemorates Delaware’s historical contribution to industry and technology. Overlooking the scenic Brandywine River, the outdoor museum trail demonstrates early American industry at its most innovative. The paved and semi-paved walking trails guide patrons through the ruins of the original black powder mills as well as beatifully restored duPont family homes.
James F. Hall Trail is a popular 1.7-mile cross-town pedestrian and bicycle trail in downtown Newark, Delaware. The 8’ wide hard surface pathway is lighted for 24-hour use and is equipped with emergency call boxes. The trail passes through three city parks, over two streams, through a pristine wetland area, and by the Old Newark Train Station, the home to the Newark Historic Society. It links residential neighborhoods, University of Delaware student housing, the Delaware Technology Park, and a shopping center.
Pinelands Nature Trail — The Pinelands Nature Trail is nestled behind the great dunes along the Atlantic Ocean and meanders through two distinctly different natural landscape features: dry, shifting sand dunes and low-lying wetland cranberry bogs. Both unusual flora and windswept pine woods add character to this natural environment. The trail is part of Cape Henlopen State Park. The park and its natural features are defined by the Atlantic Ocean, Delaware Bay and Cape Henlopen itself, a spit of land jutting into Delaware Bay where it meets the Atlantic Ocean (designated 1981).
