A sampling of National Recreation Trails in the news or recently designated. The NRT program showcases the diversity of trails across America, from our cities and suburbs to the deserts, waterways, and high mountains.
Every kind of trail activity is represented in the listing of designated NRTs. Besides hiking and bicycling, the system includes water trails, motorized routes, snow tracks, greenways, and equestrian paths.

Mary Ingles Trail System in Yatesville Lake State Park
Mary Ingles Trail System — The trail is located in the Yatesville Lake State Park, 40 miles south of Ashland, Kentucky. This trail system is comprised of six unique and varied trail loops. There are two paved exercise paths, one nature trail with access for the disabled, and three rugged primitive nature trails. The total length is 8 miles, of which 3.5 miles of the trail is fully accessible. The Mary Ingles Trail System offers many scenic views of the Yatesville Lake.
Sheltowee Trace — begins in Pickett State Park, Tennessee and ends just past Morehead, Kentucky. Various sections are open to bikes, horseback riders, and motorized uses. The only way to travel the entire 268 miles, however, is by hiking. In the local Indian language Sheltowee means Big Turtle, which is the name the Shawnee gave Daniel Boone when they adopted them into their tribe.
