Ice Age National Scenic trail route through
the state of Wisconsin
The Ice Age Trail Alliance (formerly Ice Age Park & Trail Foundation) is a volunteer- and member-based non-profit organization that protects, promotes, builds and maintains the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, a thousand mile footpath featuring Wisconsin glaciation. Ice Age Trail Alliance staff and volunteers work cooperatively with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, National Park Service, local governments, businesses and private landowners to shape the Ice Age Trail into one of the premier hiking trails in the United States. The organization is made up of 21 statewide chapters—each coordinated by volunteers. There are thousands of members and active volunteers coordinated by only a handful of staff members.
Types of training, courses, or workshops
The IATA’s signature program is the Mobile Skills Crew, a group of highly trained volunteers whose mission is to educate and empower other volunteers in building a premiere footpath. IATA host roughly 6 projects a year which are 4-6 days in length. During these projects volunteers build premiere hiking trail, structures (bridges, retaining walls, etc.), and eradicate invasive species. Support volunteers cook meals, assemble lunches for the field and greet new volunteers. The MSC has a leadership development course for volunteers who would like to lead work crews during these projects. This is called IAT-U or Ice Age Trail University. Chapters also hold work days, hold stewardship activities, and lead organized hikes throughout the year.
