Shawnee National Forest is part of the National Forest system and is located in southern Illinois. The Shawnee Volunteer Corps is a program within the agency that offers comprehensive volunteer opportunities to local, regional, and national volunteers.
Types of training, courses, or workshops you offer: Volunteer workdays/weekends; alternative spring break opportunities for college, high school, and middle school children; adopt-a-trail/trailhead program; internships; Master Trail Steward trails training course offered through Shawnee Community College; volunteer vacations; youth service opportunities; trail building clinics.
Master Trail Steward Trails Training Course
Curently offered September 12, 2009 through May 2010
Training Location: Shawnee National Forest
Group Size: Maximum 12 Minimum 4
The Master Trail Steward course is a comprehensive course comprised of the many facets needed to become a volunteer trail project leader or to improve skills as a land manager/volunteer coordinator. It includes on the ground instruction, classroom work, and self-taught independent assignments. The range of topics included in the curriculum include the history of the Forest Service, principles of trail stewardship, basic trail maintenance and construction, trail feature construction, preparation techniques necessary for leading a group of volunteers, tool rehabilitation, teambuilding, working with packstock, backcountry living skills, and environmental education. The course is offered to volunteers, yet is also available for the trail/land manager who desires additional skills for their occupation. A certificate from Shawnee Community College in Ullin, Illinois will be awarded upon completion. This is taught as a standard course AND can also be customized to suit the needs of specific sponsors.
