The national nonprofit organization Tread Lightly! sponsors the Tread Trainer program— see current scheduled courses on the online trails training calendar
The Tread Trainer program is designed to train participants in innovative, practical methods of spreading outdoor ethics to the public with a curriculum specifically focused on motorized and mechanized recreation.
Completing a course will qualify the participant to become a Tread Lightly! representative a "Tread Trainer" or a "Master Trainer." Once a participant is trained, he or she is equipped to train other educators, clubs, employees, visitors, enthusiasts or community members in the Tread Lightly! ethic. The program was created as a mechanism to disseminate the Tread Lightly! message of responsible recreation through volunteerism.
Master Trainers complete a multi-day training course on the Tread Lightly! ethic and are qualified to:
Tread Trainer Program
In Tread Lightly!'s challenge to empower generations to enjoy the outdoors responsibly, it became critical to create a mechanism that could expand the limited reach and resources of the organization. The Tread Trainer program is that mechanism. Tread Trainer is a monumental step towards successfully increasing the public’s awareness and encouraging responsible recreation practices across the nation, even around the world.
The Tread Trainer program provides training opportunities to a multitude of champions willing to spread the message of ethical and responsible recreation. The champions that will be empowered with the Tread Lightly! message include, but are not limited to, federal and state resource managers, club representatives, certified safety instructors of off-highway vehicles, and other conservation groups. By creating a cadre of volunteers and partners in education, Tread Lightly! is able to professionally train thousands and genuinely educate millions within just a few short years.
Individuals trained by Tread Lightly! are qualified as Tread Trainers. These volunteers are empowered with useful techniques and skills in presenting Tread Lightly!’s principles, and information on how to incorporate Tread Lightly! into their own programs. All participants in the Tread Trainer program will have the ability to present Tread Lightly!’s message to groups of individuals at enthusiast and community events, schools and other appropriate venues throughout the country. The concept of this program is founded on the theory of teaching 10 to teach 10 to reach 100. Based on this idea, if 100 individuals are trained to be Tread Trainers every year for 5 years, then Tread Lightly! will make relevant contact with approximately one million people in 5 years. All with the effort of only teaching a relative few.
BENEFITS
The benefits of equipping Tread Trainers with the ability to educate the public on the rewards of responsible recreation include:
Trainers receive a 100-page manual, 2 Tread Lightly! PowerPoint presentations on CD, certificate of completion, set of durable plastic Tread Lightly! hangtags, set of guides for responsible recreation, set of quick-tip brochures, set of PSAs, "On the Right Trail" video, an extra discount on all Tread Lightly! products, $25 in free Tread Lightly! educational materials, use of Tread Lightly!Õs mascot costume, table-top display, and education trunk upon request, and updates through a semi-annual newsletter, emails and website.
Trainers also receive improvements in presentation skills, networking opportunities with other agencies/organizations at the course, and firm comprehension of outdoor ethics and ways to minimize impacts when recreating.
The key to a successful workshop is to have participants that are familiar with Tread Lightly!, involved in community outreach or recreational training programs, or are interested in developing a higher awareness and competency on responsible recreation ethics.
