Recreational Trails: Design, Construction, and Maintenance

This workshop is sponsored by MN DNR Trails and Waterways; Center for Continuing Education, College of Natural Resources, University of Minnesota; and Minnesota Extension Service.

COURSE CONTENT
This course is aimed at beginning- to intermediate-level trail planners. Instructors will teach participants how to design and build trails to meet user expectations while minimizing impacts on soil, water, and cultural resources. The focus is on trails used for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and all-terrain vehicles. Construction concepts will apply to interpretive trails, but the course will not cover interpretation techniques. Participants will learn about trail users and the types of experiences that could be offered, construction standards for different types of users, selecting and marking the trail location, clearing the trail, building the tread, structures and techniques for crossing obstacles (wetlands, streams, steep hills, rocky or sandy soil, boulder fields, etc.), trail equipment, signs, and funding sources. Registration is limited to 40 participants at each location.

Cost: $30 (plus lodging if staying on-site)
SAF CFE: 11.0 CFE contact hours in Category 1, Society of American Foresters Continuing Forestry Education Certificate.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This workshop is aimed at land managers, and others, who design, build, or maintain trails on public or private lands, e.g., County foresters and park managers, Municipal recreation managers, National Forest recreation managers, Tribal land managers, Nature center directors, foresters and wildlife managers
